Elijah was born in June 2003 and abandoned at his orphanage gate when he was five years old. On admission to the institute it was found that he suffered from cerebral palsy, was tested to have normal intelligence and was found to have weakened lower limbs.

Although he tried, he could not walk, and he was given a wheelchair. He could speak both Mandarin and Cantonese fluently upon arriving to the institute. He showed his strong will, and integrated into the group life in the institute. At the age of 7 years, he liked to play games with peers and share the toys with other children. He is polite to others, and always smiles at strangers who visit the orphanage.

He has received physical therapy at the institute, and after great diligence and perseverance on Elijah’s part, he can now walk slowly while holding onto handrails (look at how proud he is of himself in the picture above!). In the institute, he is an obedient and sensible boy, and he is adored by the caretakers and medical staffs. The nannies and orphanage directors hope a family will chose him as he will make a wonderful addition to any family.



1. How does his mental ability compare to peers the same age? He has normal intelligence.

2. How does the SN affect his health? He needs to rely on wheel chairs to walk.

3. Is he potty trained? He can go to toilet by himself and he knows when he needs it.

4. Please describe his personality in details He is extroverted and optimistic. He gets along well with others. He is quite polite and will say hello to visitors and volunteers.

5. Is he well behaved and obedient? Yes, he will assist care workers to take care of other kids.

6. How are his gross motor skills? Can he walk, run, jump, walk upstairs and downstairs by himself? Can he kick a ball? Can he pick up a ball? Any limited functions? He can walk slowly when leaning on the wall. He cannot walk, run jump, climb stairs by himself, he needs a wheelchair most of the time.

7. How are his fine motor skills? Can he draw or scribble on paper? Can he pick up little things with his fingers? He can hold a pen and can pick up small objects, but his fine motor skills are delayed due to his need.

8. Is he in any kind of school? If so, what school? Can he catch up in school? He cannot go to school due to his special needs. Now, he attends classes in the SWI. Everyday, the PT teachers and other professional teachers will come to the SWI and teach him.

9. How is his emotional development? Is the child attached to anyone? Who is he close to? Does he care for other people? He is quite attached to the care workers. He likes those little boys at similar age. He learns to care for younger kids. If he finds some other kids unhappy, he will report it.

10. How are his social skills? Does he get along well with other children and adults?  He gets along well with care workers, social workers, other kids and visitors. He can manage his emotions.

11. Is he under foster care or live in the orphanage? He has been living in the SWI.

13. How is the language ability of the child? What can he say?Can he speak one word, two words or sentences ? Can he express his needs well?Is his language ability the same as peers the same age?  His speech ability is normal. He can express himself quite clearly.

14. Can the child follow directions of adults? One step, two steps, or three steps?  Yes.

15. Is the child on any medication? Besides medicine for a cold or fever, no other medicine is used. No allergy for any medicine.
